| This year’s symposium will feature a series of case study panel discussions covering preliminary relief, ethical and e-discovery issues, and damages in IP litigation (including a discussion of the Romag Fasteners v. Fossil case, currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court, which is likely to resolve a current six-to-six circuit split over the issue of trademark damages). Other panel discussions will include employee mobility issues arising from the potential sweeping changes to Florida’s and other states’ non-compete laws, and the impact of artificial intelligence on IP-related issues.
The preliminary relief panel will feature District Judges from the Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, the Honorable Mary Scriven (who is also the IP Committee’s Judicial Chair) and the Honorable Darrin Gayles, IP Committee Academic Chair, Professor Jake Linford, will moderate a panel addressing damages in IP cases and featuring Professor Jon Golden of the University of Texas Law School and damages expert Dana Trexler of Eisner Amper. Each of the panels is expected to address advanced topics in Intellectual Property Law. As always, the symposium features a unique assembly of judges, law professors, practitioners and experts.
One of the panels, focusing on e-discovery issues in IP cases, will also address ethical and technology issues, and will enable attendees to earn both ethics and technology CLE credits. The Symposium has been approved for 10.5 CLE credits, including 2 hours of technology and 1 hour of ethics. CLE credits will also apply to Intellectual Property and Business Litigation certification credits.
Our Lunch Keynote Speaker will be Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property / Deputy Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Laura A. Peter. Our Dinner Speaker for Thursday evening will be Kurt Hammerle, a patent attorney at NASA, who will discuss the legal impact of private corporations venturing into space, the application of various IP issues associated with those ventures, and NASA’s Artemis program which intends to land the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024.
The symposium will close, as it has for many years, with a series of “year in review” discussions of recent case and statutory law impacted the various aspects of Intellectual Property.
